JK Rowling is diving back into the magical world of Harry Potter. Except this time, the much loved characters of her previous series will be nowhere to be found. Rowling is making her screenwriting debut, while working with Warner Brothers, to create a movie based on the Harry Potter textbook: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Rowling said that she was approached by Warner Brothers about the movie. They were interested in using Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but did not expect Rowling to pitch her screenplay. The author was protective of her world, and rather than allowing someone else to take over, she leaped into the world of screenwriting.
The new movie will reportedly be about the textbook’s fictional author, Newt Scamander. It is planned to be the first in a new series of films with Warner Brothers.
The story will take place 70 years before Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. However, it will be neither a sequel nor a prequel to the earlier series. Rowling states that it will be set in the same old wizarding world and the rules will still apply. But it will be more of an extension on her fictional world than anything to do with Harry Potter.
It will be interesting how fans react to the movie. The world of Harry Potter is one we’re always willing to go back to. But I wonder how well it will appeal without its beloved characters.
I’m interested to see how it goes. I think I, along with numerous other fans, would love to see a prequel. But Warner Brothers approached Rowling with this idea and she just joined in for the ride. Maybe a prequel down the track?
How do you feel about the new movie?
